VVIRTU/e is a student team from the University of Technology in Eindhoven, focusing on solving various problems with solutions in the built environment. We participated in the Solar Decathlon Europe 2021/2022 (SDE21/22), where we designed a self-sufficient house aimed at addressing issues such as climate change, urban densification, and urban climate. Our design, named RIPPLE, strives to activate people to adopt an environmentally friendly
mindset, normalize sustainable living, and future-proof the design approach for the built
environment.
To demonstrate our design, we built a small part of a larger design, known as the Ripple Demonstration Unit (RDU). This unit was constructed on the TU/e campus on the KOE field and was later rebuilt in Wuppertal during the SDE21 competition. In this unit, all our innovations and concepts are implemented and demonstrated.
Within this project, I was part of the Architecture team. In this role, I was responsible for the architectural integration of the design across many topics and the overall architectural design. My specializations during this process
included the following subjects:
Scalability; Roof design; Affordability & Viability; Public & Jury Tours; Graphics & Renders; Conceptual & Architectural Design.
Not that the competition has ended, I can proudly say that we have reached 2nd place out of the18 teams. Working for VIRTU/e was an unforgettable experience in which I designed and built a building together with the team. In addition, the practical experience provided me with new insights into the field of (sustainable) architecture that can be applied to future projects.
